What is a Wiki Editor?

«

A Wiki Editor is a tanker who really enjoys Tanki Online and wants it to be the best of its kind. Someone who is willing to find out information to help Tanki players understand how parts of Tanki work. Someone who is versatile, and can follow instructions. Someone who can describe something well so everyone can read, understand and remember what they wrote.

Wiki Editors are those Helpers given rights to work on the official Tanki Online Wiki, the largest and finest source of information that is free-to-access for everyone visiting this amazing site. They keep the Wiki up-to-date, clean and well-designed, as well as spend many hours informing themselves over things to be able to explain them in an easier way for everyone to understand.

What do Wiki Editors do?

«

Wiki Editors always have something to do, as there are so many pages on the Wiki that need either the slightest change or a complete update. When a new update is released on Tanki, we are responsible for writing up a page about that update, how to use it and almost everything about it so that the community can understand how it works.

Wiki Editors spend their time proof-reading all the pages on the Wiki, as well as comparing their work with the work done by other communities' Wiki Editors: I am personally responsible of the communications happening between RU, EN, BR and PL communities related to Wiki pages. When one of the communities updates its Wiki, the other communities' Wiki Editors' Administrators (or Wiki Editors themselves) review the updates done and evaluate if they should do the same to their Wiki. For example, the «Video Blog» page was an exclusive of the EN Community, at first, but it was later used as an example for the RU, BR and PL Communities and, now, each of them have a similar page. When not proof-reading or monitoring updates / changes applied in the Game, Wiki Editors spend their time thinking of possible new articles and ask to their colleagues for opinions before starting to work on them: if their ideas are accepted, they can publish the new page. All of the above is done on a daily / weekly basis depending on the amount of tasks planned by the Administrators.

The tasks Wiki Editors have to do vary greatly. Some of us write articles about new features to the game or simply old features which haven't been covered yet. Other editors do minor edits all over the Wiki to make sure reading is comfortable for individuals. Still others have the task of checking that links are correct or putting pictures in place. In short - what we have to do is incredibly diverse day by day as both the subject of what we are doing and also the task itself changes regularly.

What would be your advice for those looking to become a Wiki Editor?

«

Being a Wiki Editor isn’t a walk in the park, so my piece of advice would be to learn the basics of HTML. This will help you a lot as the Wiki is written in a «code» that is similar to HTML. You will need to be confident in your English abilities as this job revolves around being able to structure high quality pages. Finally, being able to work well in a team is the most important thing to being a Wiki Editor.

If you are really interested in becoming a Wiki Editor, that is already a good start. Being aware of your real intentions, aims and disposal of time is fundamental, as well as being able to keep improving yourself and follow others' advices. You will need to learn how to focus on given tasks and get used to do «brain-stormings» to find ideas on how to improve our Wiki, alongside with your future colleagues. Having a wide knowledge of the English language and of the «MediaWiki» language is important since, both these languages, are what is keeping our Wiki alive.

For those wanting to become a Wiki Editor I'd suggest evaluating your self with a few questions. Do you believe you are experienced enough to be responsible for the Wiki and are you committed? If you have the necessary knowledge or writing skills you could be a huge asset and I would encourage you to apply for the Job. If you are rejected don't be downhearted - instead you should analyse why and try again another time. Good Luck!
